Rethink Ireland and Parents Plus Charity are offering sponsorship for free training places to professionals providing services to adolescents and young adults who have an intellectual disability

The Rethink Ireland Social Enterprise Fund will sponsor the training and post-training supervision of professionals in the Parents Plus Special Needs Programme (PPSN), described in greater detail on the project info link below. The funding will provide an opportunity to practitioners and teams that give support to parents/carers of young people who have an Intellectual Disability to deliver PPSN in their service.

If you support families of adolescents and young adults (between the ages of 11-25 years) who have an intellectual disability, you may wish to train in the Parents Plus Special Needs Programme. Your commitment will be to deliver the programme twice in your agency/service in the eighteen months post-training. This sponsorship opportunity is open to professionals who work in the Community and Voluntary sector, Education sector, HSE services in Primary Care and Disability sector, as well as parent-led community organisations and other family support services.

The services participating will agree to collect pre and post-course data with parents/carers to evaluate how the parents/carers attending the Parents Plus Special Needs Programme benefited from the course. There will be two tranches of PPSN training for facilitators. The first group of facilitators will train in Autumn 2022. The next group of facilitators will train in January 2023. Please contact Ciara Ni Raghallaigh at Parents Plus if you have any further queries about this initiative or if you would like to discuss your application further. You can email Parents Plus Special Needs Programme Coordinator Ciara Ní Raghallaigh ciaranir@parentsplus.ie with your query.

Parents Plus Special Needs Programme Information

The Parents Plus Special Needs Programme (PPSN) is an evidence-based parenting support programme for parents/guardians of adolescents and young adults who have an intellectual disability (aged between 11-25 years). It is the first programme of its kind in the world. A Randomised Controlled Trial (2019/20) with TCD Psychology Department, reported significant improvements in problem behaviours, parental satisfaction and self-efficacy, and goal attainment.

PPSN consists of a seven-week group delivered to support parents/carers:

– Manage behaviour and emotional problems

– Deal with puberty, sexuality and relationships

– Reduce their own stress as parents/carers

– Support their young person’s education

– Prepare their young person for adulthood and future transitions

The PPSN programme can be extended to provide a monthly follow-up support session to parents after the 7 weeks are completed (topics for five additional sessions can be added if requested by families)

The training is delivered to facilitators over 3 modules (x 4.5hrs) and it is practical and solution-focused. This will ensure you get an in-depth understanding of the programme content and skills in delivering the programme via face-to-face and online sessions.
